Why have I not heard of Unitron?
Unitron spends less on consumer advertising in the UK than some other brands, so many people only come across it when an audiologist suggests it. That says nothing about quality. Unitron is based in Canada and is part of Sonova, one of the world’s largest hearing companies. It has its own design teams and its own ideas about how hearing aids should feel to use.
Unitron has tended to put weight on ease of use, both for the wearer and for the audiologist fitting the aids. If you want hearing aids that work well without much fuss, that focus may appeal.
Which Unitron ranges are available?
Current ranges include the following. Your audiologist will show you whatever is newest when you visit.
Unitron Vivante
Vivante is Unitron’s recent technology platform. It is offered in receiver-in-canal styles with rechargeable options and at several technology levels.
Unitron Moxi
Moxi is the long-running name for Unitron’s receiver-in-canal hearing aids. This is the style most adults wear: a small case behind the ear and a thin wire leading to a speaker in the ear canal.
Unitron Insera
Insera is Unitron’s custom in-the-ear family, made to fit the shape of your ear. Sizes range from aids that fill part of the outer ear to smaller ones further in the canal, depending on your hearing and ear shape.
Unitron or Phonak: what is the difference?
This is one of the most common questions we hear, because people know the two brands are related. They belong to the same group, but they are separate brands with their own product designs, apps and approaches to fitting. Group ownership can mean shared research behind the scenes; it does not mean a Unitron is simply a Phonak with a different label.
| Unitron | Phonak | |
|---|---|---|
| Home country | Canada | Switzerland |
| Owner | Sonova | Sonova |
| Current ranges include | Vivante, Moxi, Insera | Audéo, Infinio, Sphere Infinio, Lumity, Slim, Naída |
| Profile in the UK | Less widely advertised | Widely recognised |
If you are weighing up the two, our Phonak guide covers that brand in more detail. The sensible approach is to compare them at the same technology level and listen to both.
Is a less famous brand a risk?
It is a fair question, and the answer is mostly no. What protects you when you buy hearing aids is less about the brand name and more about:
- The warranty. At our clinic, every pair comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty.
- Aftercare. We include 5 years of adjustments, cleaning and servicing.
- The fitting. Real ear measurement checks the aids deliver the right sound for your hearing loss, whichever brand you choose.
- The chance to change your mind. A free 14-day home trial before buying and a 60-day money-back guarantee afterwards.
A big name with a poor fitting can disappoint. A lesser-known brand fitted carefully can work very well.
Parts and servicing are another common worry. Because Unitron belongs to a large group and is fitted by audiologists across the country, spare domes, wax guards, receivers and chargers are routinely available. If you move away from Sutton Coldfield in future, another audiologist should be able to look after Unitron aids too.
What is it like to start wearing Unitron hearing aids?
The first weeks with any hearing aid are a period of adjustment. Expect the first few days to feel busy: rustling paper, the indicator in the car and your own footsteps may all seem loud. Your brain has not heard these sounds clearly for a while and needs time to sort them back into the background.
Some tips that help:
- Wear the aids for most of the day from the start, rather than only for short spells.
- Begin with quieter settings, such as home and one-to-one conversations, before busy places.
- Note anything that feels too loud, too soft or uncomfortable, and bring the notes to your follow-up.
- Be patient with your own voice, which often sounds odd at first and usually settles.
Your follow-up appointments in the first two weeks are there to fine-tune the aids to your feedback.
Who might Unitron suit?
Unitron is often worth considering if you:
- Want modern rechargeable hearing aids that are easy to live with day to day
- Are a first-time wearer who wants fewer controls and decisions
- Prefer a custom in-the-ear style and your ear canals have room
- Want to compare value against better-known brands at the same level
If you have very specific needs, such as severe to profound hearing loss, we may point you towards a range designed for that. Our guide to the best hearing aids in the UK explains how we weigh these choices.
What will Unitron hearing aids cost?
At Sutton Hearing Care, the price depends on the technology level, not the brand: Essential from £1,595 a pair, Advanced from £2,845 and Premium from £3,445. Each includes follow-ups in the first two weeks and the aftercare and warranty described above. See our hearing aid prices for more.
