What happens at your hearing test in Sutton Coldfield

Most high street hearing checks are quick screenings. Ours is a full diagnostic hearing test, so you leave knowing exactly how well you hear and why. Allow up to 90 minutes at our hearing centre on Sutton Oak Road.

  1. A conversation first. Your audiologist asks where you struggle, such as busy restaurants, the TV or phone calls, and what you would most like to hear better. You are welcome to bring a family member.
  2. A look in your ears. We use video otoscopy so you can see your ear canals and eardrums on a screen. If wax is blocking the canal, we book ear wax removal first, because wax muffles sound and skews results.
  3. Middle ear check. Tympanometry measures how your eardrums move and whether the middle ear is working normally.
  4. Hearing levels. We measure the quietest sounds you can hear across a range of pitches in each ear and plot them on your audiogram.
  5. Speech in noise. Tests such as QuickSIN show how well you follow conversation when it is busy, which is often the first thing people notice.
  6. Your results, in plain English. We go through your audiogram on the day and you can take a copy home.

Free hearing test or private hearing test?

Both. Your hearing test at Sutton Hearing Care is private, so you book directly with us and do not need a GP referral, and it is free. You only pay if you later decide to buy hearing aids, and you get a written quote first.

No pressure, ever. If hearing aids would not help you, we will tell you. If they would, you can try a pair at home for 14 days before deciding anything.

Who should book a hearing test?

  • You ask people to repeat themselves, or people seem to mumble.
  • Family say the TV is too loud.
  • Group conversations, church or the golf club bar are hard work.
  • You have ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus).
  • You are over 60 and have not had your hearing tested in the last two years.
  • You already wear hearing aids and want a second opinion or a check-up.

After your test

If your results show hearing aids would help, your audiologist shows you suitable styles and technology levels with prices, from £1,595 a pair. If we have them in stock, you can usually take a trial pair home the same day. If you only need a baseline result, that is fine too. We will suggest when to come back for another check.

Questions about hearing test

Is the hearing test in Sutton Coldfield really free?

Yes. The full hearing test, including the ear examination, middle ear check and speech-in-noise testing, is free. You only pay if you choose to buy hearing aids, and you get a written quote before you agree to anything.

How long does the hearing test take?

Allow up to 90 minutes. That includes a chat about your hearing, a look in your ears, the tests themselves and time to explain your results.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us online or by calling 0121 369 0780.

What if my ears are full of wax?

Wax can skew the results, so if it is blocking your ear canal we book ear wax removal first and test your hearing at least 24 hours later.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, and we encourage it. Family members often notice things you do not, and it helps to have someone hear the results too.
